WOODTURNING

Rough hewn boards are skillfully sculpted into functional works of art by a potent combination of man and machine.

METHOD

Rough boards are planed and sawed into circular blanks that are then mounted to a wood lathe, one at a time. Once the blank is mounted and centered the wood lathe spins the wood at a high speed and the artisan turner slowly sculpts the wood with hand tools. After the desired shape is achieved, the component is inspected to ensure it meets all tolerances for shape and function before being sanded and finished.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

When it comes to wood turning, a skilled artisan only needs a steady lathe and a sharp chisel to create a beautiful form. Maintaining tools and equipment is more important than any new technology. A sharp chisel is a safe chisel.

In the right hands, an assemblage of sharp chisels, gouges, and scrapers can scuplt a vast array of shapes. An arrangement of calipers assist the turner in maintaining consistency when repeating shapes across multiple components.
